To assist Mobile telecommunications / digital communications operators in the UK the government has produced a good practice guide for these purposes – Code of practice for wireless network development in England (2022 edition, published 07/03/2022). This provides comprehensive, best practice guidance for the benefit of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), their agents and contractors and local planning authorities. In addition, EPOA has developed a pre-application protocol to guide planning application (and prior approval notification) processes for digital connectivity proposals, focused primarily on proposals involving mobile telephone communications but this is equally relevant where such proposals may involve development for fixed line connectivity. This is also hosted on the Essex Design Guide webpages. Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek pre-application advice from local planning authorities when developing proposals for digital communications infrastructure, as this will expedite the planning process for all parties concerned.
