Michael Armstrong

Michael joined Essex Police in 1978 as a police constable. Michael enjoyed a varied career, beginning with general police duties. As a detective officer Michael worked on many differing areas of crime, including organised crime and major investigations. Upon promotion Michael had the opportunity to be involved in project work, visioning and introducing new concepts which are now accepted as best practice. An extended secondment to the Youth Offending Service gave Michael a solid grasp of the challenges and benefits of interagency and partnership working.

In 2007 Michael retired from operational policing and trained as a crime reduction officer. Michael developed a keen interest in the Crime Prevention Through Environment Design, (CPTED) discipline, working to achieve early accreditation in the Designing Out Crime role.

Michael is highly motivated and passionate in promoting the value of CPTED, enthusiastically supporting Secured by Design as the preferred police enabler.

Michael currently manages the Essex Police Crime Prevention Tactical Advisor/ Designing Out Crime Officer Team, whilst actively supporting Heather in her role of Strategic Designing Out Crime Officer.

Michael is the current portfolio lead for the technical specifications to enable safeguarding high risk and vulnerable victims in their own homes. Michael has extensive experience in this area of work, working as a practitioner and manager in the role since 2007.

Michael has a keen interest and detailed knowledge of vehicle related criminality, holding membership of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators.
