Katherine Wood is a freelance consultant working in culture and the arts across the UK. Since 2012 she has developed her freelance practice working on a range of projects with artists, museums, galleries and local authorities across the UK. She specialises in services for the visual arts sector building new connections between artists and audiences. Recent clients include: British Council Arts team and National Gallery of Scotland/Tate Artists Rooms programme. In 2016-18 she initiated and secured funding for the restoration and reinterpretation of a series of public art concrete murals by Essex artists Henry and Joyce Collins in Colchester.
Katherine has lived and worked in Essex for 25 years and is knowledgeable and passionate about the County. She was founding director of Firstsite (1994-2012) the visual arts organisation in Colchester. Firstsite began its life programming the Minories Art Gallery (1994-2008) before opening its purpose-built space in 2011. In addition to developing and fundraising for the new building, Katherine led a programme of contemporary work showcasing local, national and international artists, pioneered new learning and artist development strategies and extended the reach of the programme beyond the gallery walls.
Katherine is Chair of the Ragdoll Foundation, a trustee of The Hervey Benham Trust and Original Projects, Great Yarmouth and a fellow of the RSA. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Colchester School of Art & Design/University of Essex in 2012.
